Sharing the Brew Equipment Love…
Zach Fenton and Lacy Phillipe are housing what remains of David Oenbring’s homebrew gear. They took the time to put together a spreadsheet of what remains, and they want to share it with the club members. There are Modern Monks growlers, glasses and tap handles, along with bottle cappers, a regulator, cleaning brushes, mash paddle, grain mill, some grain, pin-lock kegs… and lots of other odds ‘n’ ends.
A Google spreadsheet is now set up. Here’s the link. Go take a look and put in your claim. Then contact Zach or Lacy and set up a time to get your Dave O gear. All that we ask is that you be a paid-up member of the club and, though no payment is required, you may want to consider a donation to the American Cancer Society in the name of Dave Oenbring. LINCOLN LAGERS CLUB-ONLY IMPERIAL YEAST CHALLENGE… The 2020 Edition of the Sower’s Cup: Our normal club-sponsored comp has been postponed due to the virus, however, the Lagers hosted some virtual judging for this year’s edition. The theme featured beers where the only requirement was to use Imperial Yeast. There are four basic categories: Light, Dark, Hoppy and Weird. We had a total of 27 judged entries in the four groups. LINCOLN LAGERS CLUB-ONLY COMP… The Club-only 2020 Edition of the Sower’s Cup: Our normal club-sponsored comp has been postponed due to the virus, however, the Lagers are hosting an event where the only requirement is for you to use Imperial Yeast for your fermentation. There are four basic categories: Light, Dark, Hoppy and Wild. The slightly extended deadline for entries is now Nov. 7. The judging will take place shortly after that. David A. Oenbring … Lastly and sadly, we have to a death in the brewing family to report. I got the phone call on the 8th of October from Dave’s wife Janice. Dave lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at home, with “JD” and the cats by his side. Anybody here that’s had anything to do with homebrew or the Lincoln Lagers in the last twenty or so years, had to have crossed paths with Dave O. He was knowledgeable about a myriad of topics, not just beer and spirits. And his dry sense of humor was one of the driest, for sure. When it came to homebrew and brewing beer, however, Dave walked the walk and talked the talk. In addition to being the club president for a few years, he brewed professionally with the Modern Monks and was always willing to share his knowledge with some constructive feedback. Having the luck of the draw to have known Brother Dave — as a personal friend and fellow Lincoln Lager — we’re not all just better homebrewers, we’re better people. Cheers to you, Dave! May you rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020, at 2:00 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, NE 68512.

For the Octobeer club meeting, we will be joined by club member Levi Viter and his brewing partner Todd Booher who will lead the discussion on how to make low-ABV homebrew. Many of us enjoy session brew and love enjoying multiple pints; Levi and Todd take it to the next level and they’re going to share some techniques with us. Check it out on Thursday evening!

Our normal club-sponsored comp has been postponed due to the virus, however, the Lagers are hosting an event where the only requirement is for you to use Imperial Yeast for your fermentation. Kirk (Kirk’s brew and Gifts) still has some limited supplies of Imperial yeasties. So, give him a call. For now, there will be four basic categories: Light, Dark, Hoppy and Wild. Working deadline for entries is Octobeer 31 and judging will take place during the first two weeks of Novembeer. Fun prizes for top finishers. More virtual homebrew fun can be had at our monthly get together on Thursday, July 9. Join us around 6 p.m. for some chat and the regular business portion will commence at 7 p.m. Hang out for more conversation after the business portion, which will last until 9 or when you’ve had too much virtual fun. We’ll be discussing the Nebraska Shootout (scheduled for this coming Sunday, July 12), ideas for another “anti” social, Brewers at Arm’s Length, fall picnic and options for the August meeting. In addition, we will be making plans for Mead Day; we have 120 pounds of some amazing varietal honey ordered from Z Specialty Foods. We will also be joined by Chris Proulx from the 402 Homebrew Club as our guest speaker.
Speaking of the 2020 Nebraska Shootout, the event takes place this Sunday, July 12, in Omaha. It will be hosted by the Brauer Unterstützungs Verein at the German American Society (Rathskeller). Details on times and car pooling options will be reviewed at the Thursday meeting. If you want to help by being a steward or judge, set up an account and log in here. Our club Shootout finalists are Zach Fenton & Lacy Phillippe, James Ehrman, Jordan Messerer, Brad Brown, Dustin Deisher, James Garner, Brett Jeffrey and Paul Breitkreutz! The 2020 Kegs for the Cure is in the books. Due to the COVID, this year’s event was a “bottle edition.” They distributed over 112 six packs from 19 homebrewers and raised over $6000 for the American Cancer Society.
Last chance for bottles! I have several vintage boxes (over 30 years old and still strong as ever) holding a case each that are looking for good homes. You know you still need to bottle condition those big brews, right? Filling up one or two of these retro cases is what you need. I can’t hold on to ’em forever. Send me a note and let me know… or they’re going to the recycler.

This year’s 11th annual Kegs for the Cure (KFTC) will be held on June 19. Typically, this fundraiser is held at a public space with patrons making a donation and then sampling home brew from a bunch of local brewers. This year, however, it will be a different format. With concern about the safety of brewers and attendees, the KFTC will be providing beer in take-home bottles. Remember, we’re living in unprecedented times … and if you drank a beer every time you heard the word unprecedented you’d be intoxicated since mid March…

As far as what’s going, we’re looking at another Grain Giveaway. We had eight takers in the last run for the Nebraska Shootout – scheduled to take place in July. The next one will be for the Kegs for the Cure (KFTC). This is an event that’s raising money for the American Cancer Society. They’ve been going at it for ten years and this will be year #11. The club was quite active with the Okto Beerfest for many years and its quest to donate funds to the Nebraska Stroke Association. That event has run its course and we need to brew for a cause. Please consider getting some grain and brewing for the cure! KFTC founder Gordon Coke will be on board to talk about the event and get you the latest details on how you can contribute.
Let’s hope we can get back to the Happy Raven in June. I’m sure I speak for many when I say, “When this thing’s over, we’re going to need a beer.”
