Rules

  1. All beer entries must be brewed by an active member of any homebrew club located within the state of Nebraska.
  2. Each homebrew club may enter a maximum of two of their members' beers to be judged in each style category, plus two Best Damn Beer candidates. It is up to each club to determine how they will evaluate their members' beer candidates and to select which beers they will advance to the Shootout competition.
  3. Any person submitting a beer entry may not judge that same style category. You may, however, help judge in the other categories.

Bottle Entry Guidelines:

  • Enter two bottles of your homebrewed beer, preferably using 12-ounce size brown glass bottles that are free of any identifying marks (e.g., embossed logos, stickers, tape, marker, etc.).
  • Attach a standard BJCP bottle entry form to each bottle using a rubber band. Do not tape or glue on the label.
  • Indicate the entering homebrew club on the label.
  • Indicate the style category and sub-category on the label.
  • If appropriate to the style you are entering, e.g. Belgian Specialty, please indicate the special ingredients used so that judges can properly evaluate your beer.

Scoring

First Round:

  1. Beers will be judged in flights based on the style category in which they were entered.
    • Each flight will have two or more judges, at least one should be BJCP-certified.
  2. Score sheets will be filled out during the first round, and this feedback will be returned to each brewer after the competition.
  3. Each set of judges will select a first, second and third-place finisher from their flight of beers.
  4. From each style category, the first-place beer will win 3 points, each second-place beer wins 2 points, and each third-place beer wins 1 point.
    • Honorable Mentions do not earn points.

BOS Round:

  1. Each style category's top finisher moves on to the Best of Show (BOS) round to be evaluated by a panel of at least two BJCP-certified judges, who will select their top three overall beer entries; after which, the overall first-place beer will win 3 points, the second-place beer wins 2 points, and the third-place beer wins 1 point.
  2. Style category points and BOS points are added together by the hosting homebrew club in order to determine the winning club.
  3. The winning homebrew club receives the traveling Shootout Cup trophy.

Special BDB Round:

  • In the event of a tied score, the first-place beer from the non-style-based category Best Damn Beer (BDB) adds 1 point to the club which entered it.
  • Regardless of any club points earned, the brewer of the Best Damn Beer winner receives the traveling Rusty Capper trophy.
