THE AUGUST MEETING SUNDAY, AUGUST 8th, 2010 Begin at 4PM Jason's Place 5421 Tipperary Trail (near 27th & Old Cheney). Click Here For Google MapsWe’re gong to Jason McLauglin’s place on Sunday, August 8, 2010. It’s also the AHA Mead Day. We can get things started at 4 pm, and interested parties should bring their carboys and honey to make a mead. The AHA has posted a recipe and instructions for the 2010 event http://wiki.americanhomebrewers.org/MeadDay2010, and they have a webpage about the event as well http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/p ... s/mead-day. Mitch gave me some info on getting local honey in Bennet http://www.manta.com/c/mmf8r5z/honey-bee-world-inc. Northern brewer has a good selection of honey and mead kits as well for a good price, and shipping is a flat $7.99. Check out the forum and let’s see if we can gang up on a couple of orders. We will BBQ some food, and people should bring some lawn chairs as well. If any Lincoln Lagers have some finished mead, please bring some for people to try. We could get some type of mead talk, too, from those who attended the NHC last June in Minnesota.

Gents, I hope plenty of you are planning on making some mead at the meeting. PLEASE GIVE ME A COUNT OF WHO IS PLANNING ON IT! I will supply Chlorine/Chloramine free water. I have attached below the NHC presentation about how to make mead in 2 months. We sampled mead from the presenter Steve Piatz that was made 7 weeks prior, and it was excellent. ***NOTE*** Everyone on the Mead Maker of the Year panel used one specific yeast, Narbonne 71B. Click here ---> Making Mead the Easy WayAlso, I have purchased bulk amounts of all the nutrients he suggests, and I will be handing out measured amounts to everyone making a batch that day. Including: Fermaid-K Diammonium Phosphate GoFerm

I am planning on being there! And making mead.
Speaking of mead, I just called out to Honey Bee World, and they sell their honey in bulk for $2.50/# Doubt you'll find a better deal than that unless you know a beekeeper. They have their own honey, which is mostly clover, some wildflower, and alfalfa. They also have some bulk honey from Montana, which I'll check when I'm there.
I'm willing to go out there and pickup honey, but you'll need to let me know how much you want. I'll be making a trip there either this weekend or the next, before the meeting.
I called out to Kirk, and he says he has "boxes and boxes" of that yeast...

That's a great price and I wish I would have checked with them before I ordered 65 lbs from Wisconsin. Would have much rather stayed in Nebraska but I think I am committed now along with 3 others I took with me at $3.37 per lb. Shipping just adds to much to the total. Where do you have to go to get this? If you don't go till next week we might be in for another 60 lbs but I may not be able to get out of the order I already placed. Let me know when you go and I will let you know if I got out of my deal. Good Job!

Mitch Well the honey I ordered from Wisconsin has been shipped and will get to my house early this next week. So thanks for the offer but we will have to go with the little more expensive honey this time. But it will be good to see and taste the difference in honeys before the process as well as after. See you at Jason's next Sunday.

Dub: What would you suggest each mead maker needs to bring to the party? I would take the following items for granted as bring for sure; 1. Honey 2. Carboy 3. Water (if you don't want to use Lincoln city water) 4. Burner with pot? Just let us know what you think here and we will bring what ever is needed.

Due to storage issues, I won't be making mead, but I will bring plenty to sample including a 'fresher' raspberry melomel than what I had at the picnic.
I can bring an example of how to not make a braggot too

Those sound good Steve, bring yeast as well, Mitch posted above that Kirk has boat loads of the 71B dry yeast, 2 packs per 5 gallons. I have all the nutrients. If anyone is planning on bringing their own water, please let me know so I don't whip up more than I need to. Bring as dish! There will be Brats provided.

Found out that at Honey Bee World, you have to buy #60 to get the 2.50 price...since I saw the note from SteveO earlier today, I went and bought my 15# for the batch. Ran me right about $45. So not all that different from your buy. malkore wrote: I can bring an example of how to not make a braggot too Gregg - ALWAYS bring examples of weirdness and other such learning experience brews/fermentations!

Don't feel quite as bad now about the honey price but still should have tried harder to get ah-old of him prior to ordering out of state. We could have all benefited but "oh well next time". I will be bringing at least 5 gal of RO and could bring 10 just in case. DA about the yeast I will get to Kirks but if one of the peabs I have in my honey buy gets out there before me I would not mind it if you picked me up a couple packs, just let me know. I may not make it out there till the end of the week. See ya Sunday if not before.

Steve 0:
I'm planning to get to Kirk's in the next day or two. I'll get you some yeast.
I'll give Kirk a copy of the bus trip poster too and see if he'll do the sponsorship deal with us.

Kim I will count on you to pick me up two packs of yeast and will square up later with you and the others. I have received the honey so we are good to go there. Please pass it on to our two other partners. Chris we will be glad to see you and enjoy your company if you make mead or not. Sounds like a fantastic party to me.

Thanks so much to Jenny and Jason for hosting the August meeting/mead-a-thon. With all of the mead that can be made in a short time with the new method, we may need to have a lot more women-folk and staggered judging at the annual picnic to prevent overly-staggering judges.
